TERRORISM: CAN TASKS ON BUHARI, SECURITY CHIEFS TO PROTECT CHURCHES AGAINST BANDITS

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on President muhammadu Buhari and security Chiefs to rise up to the challenges in the defense of Churches in Zamfara State to prevent the terrorists from carrying out their threats against Christians.

A statement signed by the General Secretary of CAN, Joseph Bade Daramola, said the Zamfara State Police Command reportedly confirmed that a threat letter was earlier sent to Christians in the state asking them to stop worship and to close down churches or risk their violent attacks.

The association expressed her displeasure over the manner the security agencies have been handling the issue of errorism in the Northern part of the country.

According to the statement, “Now that both the leaderships of Christianity and Islam in the country are working together on how to stop their criminalities in the Northwest, they are now trying to introduce divisive ways by declaring war against Christians and churches in the zone especially in Zamfara State where they are gradually turning into their strongholds.

“We have no problem with Islam or with our Muslim brothers and sisters but with the handful fanatics and their financiers who have declared war against Christianity. We appeal to all peace-loving Muslims to speak against those who are painting Islam what is not.

“We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to sanction any Commissioner of Police or Zonal Police Commanders and the Director of State Security Services wherever kidnappers operate in the country henceforth. This will go a long way in reducing the menace as we are approaching the Yuletide season. We have never had it this bad.” the General Secretary said.

ANAMBRA ELECTION:11 POLITICAL PARTIES SET TO BATTLE SOLUDO BEFORE TRIBUNAL

The Tribunal said the timeline for filing notice of petitions had elapsed.

Eleven political parties that participated in the November 6 and November governorship election in Anambra have filed petitions challenging the outcome of the exercise.

Surajo Gusau, Secretary of the 2021 Anambra Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, disclosed this to reporters in Awka on Tuesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor-elect, Charles Soludo and his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) were declared winners of the election.

Mr Gusau, however, said the timeline for filing notice of petitions had elapsed.

He said members of the 3-man panel were expected to arrive in Anambra following the filing of the petitions and that the fears that the panel would sit in Abuja was not correct.

This is against the backdrop that petitioners had appealed to the President of the Court of Appeal to allow the tribunal sit in Awka as the cost and inconveniences of going to Abuja were enormous.

NAN reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) with its candidate, Andy Uba, was among those who approached the tribunal with petitions.

Also, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) and its candidate, Afam Ume-Ezeoke, in their petition prayed the tribunal for the nullification of the election on the ground that the Bi-Modal Accreditation Verification System (BVAS) was not in the electoral act.

The Accord Party with its candidate, Godwin Maduka, also called for the nullification of the election on the ground of irregularities.

Meanwhile, Ifeatu Obiokoye, special adviser to Governor Wille Obiano on political matters, told reporters that APGA was not losing sleep over the petitions, adding that a particular party was sponsoring some lesser political parties to go to tribunal.

Mr Obiokoye said that “Our party APGA won the election and we are prepared to defend our mandate at the tribunal”. (NAN)
