WHY SENATE REJECTED LAURETTA ONOCHIE AS INEC COMMISSIONER

Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigera has refused to confirm Lauretta Onochie as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, after she was nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Senate reasoned that Lauretta Onochie, who is Special Assistant to the President on New Media, hails from Delta state and the Chairman, Legal
Services of INEC, May Agbamuche is also from Delta State.

Chairman Senate Committee on INEC, Kabiru Gaya, in his report, said Onochie did not satisfy the provisions of the Federal Character Principles and the Senate at the committee of the whole subsequently voted against her nomination.
