N/ASSEMBLY MAKES U-TURN: AMMEND PRIMARIES CLAUSE

The Senate has removed the direct Primaries clause 84 in the Electoral Amendment Bill, 2021 and brought in other modes of primaries by political parties in choosing their candidates for elections.

With the removal of clause 84 of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2021, which generated serious controversies, political parties now have three options; Direct, Indirect and Consensus modes of Primaries.

Leader of the Senate, Senator Yahaya Abdulahi, raised a motion for re-committal of the Bill to the Committee of the Whole in accordance with Order 87 of the Senate Standing Orders, 2022, to address the ammendment.

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan said, the amendment to the controversial clause was to allow Nigerians have the choice of exercising franchise without being hindered while participating in democratic process.

The Senate on December 21, 2021 officially received and read the President Muhammadu Buhari’s communication, rejecting the electoral bill, citing insecurity, cost of conducting direct primaries and infringement on the rights of Nigerians to participate in governance as reasons for withholding assent to the Bill.
