COURT REMANDS EDUCATION SECRETARY OVER DIVERSION OF UNICEF SCHOOL BAGS

A Yola Area Criminal Court has remanded the Education Secretary of Mubi South Local Government Area for allegedly diverting 800 school bags donated by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Presiding Judicial officer of the Court, Musa Nuhu Garta, ordered that Mustaspha Mohammed, Musa Mahmud, Aliyu Mohammed and Mohammed Yahaya and one Babale who was officially entrusted with the UNICEF school bags, be remanded in the custody of the Correctional Centre, while hearing was adjourned to November 1, 2021.

The prosecution, alleged that the Education Secretary diverted 800 bags which he gave to the UNICEF Distribution Co-ordinator, Mustang Mohammed, who in turn converted and sold some to Musa Mamud of Mubi North at the sum of N330,000.

It was also alleged that Musa Mahmud later sold the bags to Aliyu Mohammed and Mohammed Yahaya of Mubi North respectively at the sum of N420,000.

The school bags were donated for distribution to vulnerable school children mostly affected by insurgency in Adamawa State, to support education.

Mr Joel Isaiah, a UNICEF consultant for education, condemned the alleged diversion of learning materials for school children, emphasizing that the United Nation Organisation received credible information that UNICEF-sponsored learning materials meant for vulnerable children were being sold in open markets in Adamawa State.

The Defendants were arraigned before the Court for conspiracy, breach of official trust and receiving stolen property.
