OGONI YOUTHS PROTEST, BLOCKS EAST-WEST ROAD FOR HOURS

Protesting Youths from the four Ogoni-speaking
Local Government Areas of Rivers State on Monday morning blocked the Eleme-Onne axis of the East-Westroad in protest of the poor condition of the federal highway.

The Youths, in their large numbers mobilised trucks which they used in blocking both ends leading to the only bridge connecting Port Harcourt.

The section, measuring 15 kilometres with a connecting bridge, was completely blocked by the protesters, causing heavy vehicular traffic on the road.

The protesters called on the Federal Government to of the East-West road with at least three flyovers at strategic locations in Akpajo, Alesa and Onne, all in Eleme
Local Government Area.

The resolute protesters also called for the remodeling of the existing bridge at Aleto junction.

Commercial activities around the axis were brought to a halt while the protested.

The road which hosts large volume as a result of the regular hauling of goods from the Onne seaport, the Port Harcourt Refining Company, the Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone, ranks amongst the busiest Federal Government highways in the country.
